Grizzly Man

Grizzly Man is a fantastic documentary film by Werner Herzog chronicling the life and death of Timothy Treadwell who spent thirteen years living with bears in Katmai National Park and Preserve in Alaska. Treadwell spent thirteen consecutive summers living amongst grizzly bears in the national park and chronicled his time there on a video camera. Treadwell used his videos to raise public awareness concerning the plight of bears in North America. He honestly believed that the bears trusted him and would even touch them though warned repeatedly by park officials of the danger in doing so. At the end of his thirteenth visit, in 2003, Treadwell and his girlfriend Amie Huguenard were killed and partially eaten by a bear.

Herzog depicts Treadwell as a disturbed man, escaping previous drug and alcohol addictions, who may have entertained a death wish as he approached the end of his life. Herzog does not condemn him for this. The audio recording of the fatal attack which killed both Treadwell and Huguenard was not included in the film but a clip of Herzog watching it and being visibly distressed as a result, is included. A beautifully made film about a sad yet even more beautiful story, I would recommend everyone to go to sky.com/hd to watch it.
