The influence of Faust

‘Faust’, written by Johann Wolfgang von Goethe and published after his death, is widely recognized as the best long poem in modern literature. In 1814 the first operatic version of Faust was performed by Spohr which went on to inspire the operas of Schumann, Busoni, Boito, Gounod, Berlioz, and Schnittke. ‘Faust’ also inspired many symphonic works by Mahler, Liszt, and Wagner. The facet of the plot has taken on increasing literary importance. The idea of selling one’s soul to the devil for power over the physical world became a view of the victory of technology and industrialization and its negative attendant human expenses.

The movement in German poetry called “introversion” modeled itself on Goethe’s ‘Faust’. Goethe’s words also inspired a great number of compositions by Wolf, Beethoven, Schubert, Belioz, and Mozart. “Mignon’s Song” is perhaps the most influential piece which opens with the most famous lines in German poetry: “Do you know the land where the lemon trees bloom?” This is an allusion to Italy. If I were you I would use my Wickes discount codes to buy a copy of Faust. It truly is a wonderful poem on so many levels, I can guarantee that you shall enjoy it.

Betting on Sports

The most important thing about betting on sports is understanding as many of the factors as you can. This includes understand who is having a streak of good form (or indeed even luck) based upon recent performances. On top of this, it is crucial to understand the structure of the bets that you are making, are they one or two-way bets, have you put up your maximum liabilities up front or may you end up in arrears etc.? Is this the best offer that you can get, or would a trip down the road save/make you a substantial amount due to the differing terms of sports betting?

So with sport, as with the lottery. You must understand the principles of the UK national lottery if you’re to win. Because the lotto is much more influenced by luck than sporting events tend to be, you’re ability to predict is diminished. It is therefore the opinion of the author that the most important thing to do when playing the lottery is to have a solid, reliable lotto checker. That way you can easily and reliably identify whether or not you’ve won!

Xmas Preparation!

Christmas is a-coming people, I hope everyone's getting ready with their Christmas shopping!

I'm getting all mine done now because as soon as it hits December Christmas day starts charging towards you at warp speed, it ends up being Christmas Eve before you know it!

I've bought my husband's gift and now I'm looking for the kids' gifts online. I'm ordering the older one an r4 3ds card for the Nintendo 3DS we got him for his birthday. One of the younger lads at work said he'll kit it out for me with the software it needs and he'll put some games and movies on it if I let him know what I want. Such a sweet lad, I'm going to get him a voucher or something for Christmas to thank him for his help!

For my younger one I'm getting Mario Kart on Wii with all the driving wheel accessories and stuff, but there's a load of other stuff coming from Santa so I don't have to worry too much about my gifts to the kids, they'll be chuffed with everything I'm sure!

Now it's just bits for my parents and the in-laws, and I'm almost done!

Grizzly Man

Grizzly Man is a fantastic documentary film by Werner Herzog chronicling the life and death of Timothy Treadwell who spent thirteen years living with bears in Katmai National Park and Preserve in Alaska. Treadwell spent thirteen consecutive summers living amongst grizzly bears in the national park and chronicled his time there on a video camera. Treadwell used his videos to raise public awareness concerning the plight of bears in North America. He honestly believed that the bears trusted him and would even touch them though warned repeatedly by park officials of the danger in doing so. At the end of his thirteenth visit, in 2003, Treadwell and his girlfriend Amie Huguenard were killed and partially eaten by a bear.

Herzog depicts Treadwell as a disturbed man, escaping previous drug and alcohol addictions, who may have entertained a death wish as he approached the end of his life. Herzog does not condemn him for this. The audio recording of the fatal attack which killed both Treadwell and Huguenard was not included in the film but a clip of Herzog watching it and being visibly distressed as a result, is included. A beautifully made film about a sad yet even more beautiful story, I would recommend everyone to go to sky.com/hd to watch it.

Blue as sadness or male

Blue has been culturally endowed with many different meanings. In English, blue represents the emotion of sadness, one would say “She was feeling a bit blue”, for example. In German, the colour refers to being drunk, an interesting historical pairing. As in the ancient world, urine would be used to dye cloth blue with indigo or woad. Another understandable reason why blue would be paired with sadness is because it is a colour that can be used in relation to rain, which is understood to trigger depressive moods.

Yet strangely, blue can often represent the very opposite and can be associated with optimism and happiness. Such emotions are heightened on days when the weather is good, when there are blue skies. Clear days with blue skies have been associated with happiness for hundreds of years.

Blue is also used in the West to represent the male gender in contrast to the pink utilized for females. This was a strange reversal, as until the early 1900s, blue was a colour for girls instead. As gu10 led’s have no colour, one cannot determine their gender!
