The influence of Faust
‘Faust’, written by Johann Wolfgang von Goethe and published after his death, is widely recognized as the best long poem in modern literature. In 1814 the first operatic version of Faust was performed by Spohr which went on to inspire the operas of Schumann, Busoni, Boito, Gounod, Berlioz, and Schnittke. ‘Faust’ also inspired many symphonic works by Mahler, Liszt, and Wagner. The facet of the plot has taken on increasing literary importance. The idea of selling one’s soul to the devil for power over the physical world became a view of the victory of technology and industrialization and its negative attendant human expenses.

The movement in German poetry called “introversion” modeled itself on Goethe’s ‘Faust’. Goethe’s words also inspired a great number of compositions by Wolf, Beethoven, Schubert, Belioz, and Mozart. “Mignon’s Song” is perhaps the most influential piece which opens with the most famous lines in German poetry: “Do you know the land where the lemon trees bloom?” This is an allusion to Italy.
